Modern Filipino Food with a Twist at Mesa Grill

I got giddy when me and the squad had the opportunity of sampling the food of one of today's most popular Filipino restaurants, Mesa Modern Filipino Grill. I have heard a lot of good things about their food and I was really excited heading into this one.

Tofu Salad

It is shrimp on top of century egg and tofu and each order has 8 pieces. What's not to like about that? To top it all off, they are put on top off soy sauce as well.

1/2 Crispchon

The Crispchon is something you have to try when you go here. It may be a bit pricey but that's because it is lechon. It is also cooked in two ways either in pandan leaves or sauteed in garlic and chili. I prefer the first option as it is mixed with wansuy, cucumber and leeks inside the pandan crepe along with 6 sauces to choose from. Oh my!

Tinapa Roll

The Tinapa Roll is accompanied by Sauce numbah 5 which means there is a little bit of vinegar by the side, a little bit of lettuce against the lights, a little bit of salted egg all night long and a little bit of fish makes me your man. Seriously, it's called number 5 because they were sampling a lot of sauces and it's the 5th one.

Hito Flakes on Spoon

Garlic Chicken

Eric told us that the Garlic Chicken is actually his grandmother's recipe but nobody ever orders it. I just have one question. Why on earth not? It is so crunchy on the outside and yummy on the inside. It got me hooked on the first bite.

Sigarilyas sa Gata

For me, anything in Gata is simply heaven and then I found out Mesa has Sigarilyas sa Gata. If there is a place that is upwards of heaven then that was where I got to when I got to sample it.

Swahe on the Rocks

I was really amazed at how this dish was cooked. The raw shrimps were put on top of Lava rocks inside a pot. It is closed for a few seconds then when it is opened, it is ready to be eaten just like that. I should repeat this as a magic trick to show to my future kids if I ever have one.

Baby Squid in Olive Oil

I love squid and Mesa putting it in olive oil is just a stroke of genius. I'd suggest this to be a pulutan for one of those nights that will end up ending late.

Duck Basil Fried Rice

I really appreciate the fact that all the food they have include a twist in them. I mean, I have never tried fried rice with duck basil in it so this is a first and it won't be the last. I'm definitely coming back and ordering this again.

Chicken Binakol Soup

I thought the Chicken Binakol was a spin off of Chicken Tinola and I was right. However, it tastes a lot better than Chicken Tinola plus the presentation is so nice it makes it so unforgettable.

Overall, I rarely anticipate my next visit to a restaurant but this is one of those exceptions already. In fact, I am ecstatic for my next gastronomic adventure to Mesa Grill. What an exceptional meal we had.

2015 - The Year The Squad Grew Bigger and Better

I would have never thought that my small blogger group would grow to what it is now. From the Freelance Four to an enormous Team Aldous. 2015 was definitely the year that changed this group forever. Despite the name, our group is not about just one person. It is all about helping each other out in the blogging world.

2015 would have been a dud without these bloggers (turned friends) joining the team:

Sarie

Lights! Camera! Action! The moment you see Team Aldous' Fair-weathered Filmmaker, you'll realize she is all business. Underneath that serious look though is a very fun loving person.

Did You Know? Sarie used to write for Playboy. Wow, where do I apply?

Dani

I'm not ashamed of admitting one of the few blogs I read every now and then is the blog of Team Aldous' Architect of Awesomeness. She can draw your interest into her posts from start up until the very end without the need of a catchy title. Now, THAT is a good writer.

Did You Know? Dani is the community manager of one of the most active NGOs dedicated to helping the poor.

Missy

Missy is such a sweet girl that it is hard not to fall in love with her whether you're a guy or a girl. She is one of those girls who would love to live life to the fullest and I definitely support any decision she makes.

Did You Know? Don't get into an argument with Missy. She is a lawyer by profession.

Shelley

The first time you look into the eyes of Team Aldous' Brave Bookworm, you are going to be so intimidated. Don't let her strong personality fool you though, she is easy to get along with. A clear combination of beauty and brains indeed.

Did You Know? Shelley is such a bookworm that she has a 2015 reading challenge and has read 190 out of 200 books and the year ain't even over yet.

Mariel & Chin

Always mistaken for Koreans, the Dee sisters are twinning it all the time with their excellent taste in glamour and style. You'll never think they are actually food bloggers because of how they stay in excellent shape.
Did You Know? Contrary to popular belief, Chin is actually the Ate. I initially thought it was Mariel so sorrryy, Mariel!

Manfred

You are not alone if you mistake Manfred as a macho bouncer working late in the club. Seriously, you'd think Team Aldous' Gifted Genius is quiet at first but when you talk to him he will tell you what he thinks about today's leaders including who he thinks will become the next president in next year's elections and nope it's not Manong Mangtataho.

Did You Know? Manfred is a law student which means we have a lawyer (Missy), a law student (Manfred) and an incoming law student (Cohen). Talk about 3 generations of justice.

Jen

Team Aldous' Testy Tita is considered as the elderly of the group. She is the one approached by the young blood whenever they are seeking advice for career or love life. On a serious note, Jen never runs out of things to say at events which is always a good thing.

Did You Know? Jen likes to DIY almost everything including sewing her own clothes(!!!).

Cess

Cess is a model, host, nurse, make-up artist, entrepreneur and an EMT all at the age of 22. Being an EMT must be hard as you can imagine all the boys playing dead in order to have Cess perform CPR on them.

Did You Know? Phantasm Darkstar is Cess' Goth name

Tin

Tin's blog used to be known as xtinadaily.blogspot.com which proves how active she is. It is like getting a new blog post served daily........like coffee. You are missing half of your life if you have yet to meet Team Aldous' Ambitious Adventurer. The stories she will share with you are going to be unforgettable ones.

Did You Know? Tin's blog started out as an anonymous blog as in no pictures and names.

Jenny

Team Aldous' Dashing Dancer is unlike any diva you have met in your life. She has that alluring smile, friendly attitude and who could not notice those abs? By the way, remember that story of the girl whose dance moves got everyone staring at her in the club? That was all Jenny.

Did You Know? Apart from being a professional dancer, Jenny is also a licensed teacher.

Mae

Mae to Team Aldous is like Adam Levine is to Maroon 5 and LeBron James is to the Cavaliers. She is the headliner, showstopper and star rolled into one. Not only that, Team Aldous' Witty Workhorse is one of the most humble human beings I have ever known.

Did You Know? It took Mae a year before she finally posted a picture of her beautiful face in one of her blog posts.

Karla

If you know you are going to be stuck in Edsa for 4 hours, better bring Team Aldous' Wholesome Wanderer and you won't notice how fast time flies. Seriously, there is never a dull moment when Karla is around. When Karla brings her trademark backpack, you will never guess where her next adventure is.

Did You Know? Fall in love with Karla's business card as it has one of her well-taken Instagram pictures on it (no kidding!).

Cohen

I'm no fortune teller but I am certain Team Aldous' Kikay Kolonel has a very bright future ahead of her. She's got the looks, numerous talents and the will to succeed.

Did You Know? A few of Cohen's numerous talents are playing the guitar and singing. Hear her cover some of today's hottest songs like Justin Bieber's "Sorry" and Ariadna Grande's "Problem" at soundcloud.com/coco-sy

Rubie

Rubie can get along with just about anyone from the restaurant owner down to the manong sorbetes. In fact, she is one of those people who is always in a good mood which is always a good thing. Oh yeah, don't forget about her cute wacky poses too. Those shouldn't be missed.

Did You Know? Rubie's blog has an Advice section. Now we know where broken hearts go.

Jackie

Jackie is a woman of a few words but that does not mean she does not have anything to bring to the table. In fact, there were many instances when we won't start if she hasn't arrived. It just ain't complete without her.

Did You Know? Jackie bleaches and dyes her hair herself.

Louise

Team Aldous' Kulet Kaptain is never at a loss for words. The mood turns from dull to jolly the moment she arrives. Louise is definitely a rare talent and someone who is one in a million. In fact, it will be a long time before you find someone like her.

Did You Know? Louise doesn't know how to ride a bike and it is her top priority on her bucket list to learn it.

Obie

When Obie joins an event, you can expect it to be something special. Team Aldous' Kembot Queen always steals the show even if she doesn't mean to. There will be a lot of bloggers who will join the team in the coming years but one thing is for sure, there will NEVER be another Obie Mercado. That's how one of a kind she is. GANERN!!!

Did You Know? Obie is also a professional make-up artist. Follow her make-up IG @makeup_by_obie

Who says we can't be bigger and stronger again next year???

BRING ON 2016!!!!

Tapella - More than just Tapas

When I met Chef Rob Spakowski at the Best Desserts event, I knew it would result into something epic and it did. Me and the rest of the squad were able to sample their best sellers and we all came away more than satisfied. I really have to say that their service is great especially the server who kept his eye on us. The server's name is Choco so I can't help but sing "I'm In Love with a Coco.."

Ensalada Tapella (P200)

Ensalada Mediterranea (P295)

As most of you may know, I am not really a salad person so I barely had any of the salad. I saw the other bloggers enjoyed it a lot though so for the health buffs out there, I'm sure you will as well.

Gazpacho de Mango (P175)

I am not one of those people who appreciates cold soup. I like it when its hot unless you are going to serve it for dessert. This one came while we were just starting so it felt a bit weird but it was good nonetheless.

Chorizo Picante (P295)

Muslos De Pollo Frito (P250)

My only complaint about the chicken lollipop was that there were only 6 of them. There should be a lot more to satisfy this foodie's cravings.

Huevos Con Morcilla Sisig (P275)

I loved their twist to the classic Sisig dish as instead of having rice as the carbs, they had fries underneath and its a really better version. In fact, it was my favorite out of all the food that was served tonight.

Pote Gallego (P175)

I liked this soup a lot despite the fact that there were a lot of ingredients under that pond. I am not a fan of that since the soup might get you full already before the main course arrives. However, it was good so I ended up going back to it after sampling the main courses.

Morcilla De Cebolla (P450)

Chopitos Fritos (P250)

Arroz Sobrasada (P375)

Arroz Manchego (P675)

Paella De Marisco (P700)

All the Paellas deserve a round of applause. If I were to recommend one of them, it would definitely be the seafood one. I just wish it had more shrimp in it.

Prime Rib Grilled Villagodio Style (P300/100g)

The main highlight was without the doubt the Roast Beef which was cooked right in front of you. You are see that it is going to be turned from raw into tender right before your eyes and you are even going to decide when you are going to eat it while it is getting cooked. You can wait a while longer before its really cooked or eat it right away while it is still medium rare. I chose to not wait that long because it looked really good and it tasted excellent though. What a delightful treat!

Lapu Lapu A La Sal (P210/100g)

One of their best sellers is the baked lapu lapu. I am not really a fish fan but it is certainly something I will order when I go back here. Yes, you heard that right. Despite the fact that today's traffic is making Makati look like long distance travel, I will certainly be back here and try out the rest of the items in their promising menu.

Adios!

7 Must Tries at Urban Eats

One of the reasons why there are so many food parks nowadays is because it is a less pain in the wallet for both the hungry hounds and the food stall owners. Enter the newest one at Congressional Avenue Extension: Urban Eats. We tried almost everything here and it is time to give my take on the 7 dishes you should not miss here.

We arrived on a Saturday night and it is Acoustic nights which happens every Saturday. It is additional entertainment to those who chose to have their dinner or midnight snack here since they are open until 12 midnight.

It was a good thing we got some Japanese food in the form of Nihon Riyori's Bacon Wrapped Tuna Yakitori. I have to admit I have never tasted anything like it and its good especially in soy sauce.

My favorite dish of the night has got to be the Shrimplet Gladiators by the Hungry Knights. I even got to talk to one of the owners and it turns out he is an FEU basketball player. I congratulated his school on winning the UA&P Men's Basketball championship (baka manlibre?). It is easy to see that it is basically baked shrimp drooling with cheese mixed with corn and carrots and it is such a wonderful combination that is going to tickle your taste buds in ways you'd never imagine.

The last time I ate at Farina's Ilocos Empanada, they didn't have pizza yet so I am glad they have one now in the form of Longganisa Pizza with lots of cheese, onions and of course longganisa bits. This is one of those dishes that you better eat while it is hot because it won't be as good anymore when it gets cold.

I love burritos like a hombre and the Chicken Burrito of Taqueria Manuela Y Margarita simply ruled. Speaking of Margherita, you should try their Margherita too as I ended up drinking it fast like water because it was that good.

One of the food stalls I really wanted to try here was Crazy Waffles and they did not let me down one bit. I got to try Happy Gilmore which is BLT (bacon, lettuce, tomato) in a wafflewich. I don't know why it was named after that old movie though and I preferred to not know why because it is the taste that matters. Yummy!

I was already sweating like it was the middle of the summer even though its December. It is a good thing I had Mocha Frappe from Cafe Fratello. It has that extraordinary taste that will keep you coming back for more.

Last and certainly not the least, it is Babita's version of S'mores. I actually learned how to eat s'mores here and that is to use the crackers as spoons and put in as much marshmallow and chocolates in it as you can. What a sinful but delicious treat!

They even have a place where you can padlock your everlasting commitment with your sweetheart. After that, you can throw your key in the water. Just be sure to not throw it in your partner's food because you would end up having to put another padlock there after several months.
