After having eaten at almost all the restaurants at UP Town Center, Red Onion Cafe was one of a few restaurants that I wanted to come back to. They have Taiwanese specialty foods that you can hardly resist. It was a good thing I got to come back to sample their specialty dishes thanks to co-owner Mark Endaya. It was too bad the other owner Wen Szu Lin was unable to join us due to his busy schedule.
Mark and Wen had a hand in making the recipes for Red Onion Cafe. They also had help from big name chefs in Taiwan and China. Me and other bloggers that I invited were able to sample their food and we went home with our full tummies and satisfied faces.
I had Freshly Squeezed Lemonade (P88) for drinks. The best part about this drink is the refill can be availed for 50% off.
The first dish we had was the 3 Spices Beef Noodle (half beef and half tendon) P288. The one above is not the actual serving as it was divided into small cups for all the bloggers who arrived. I really love their hand shaved noodles and we owe it all to their robotic chef.
The Taiwanse Crispy Dumplings (P198) made for a great appetizer. It is their version of gyoza but this one is breaded and served upside down. I give the dish 10 points for creativity and an even higher score for taste.
Unlike other versions of 3 Cups Chicken (P278), theirs did not have much bones which is always a plus in my eyes.
During my first visit here I could not stop raving about their Double Fried Sweet & Sour Pork (P228). When I got back, it impressed me even more which I did not think was possible. The crunchiness alone of the dish made it a must try.
Even if you would want to stay away from rice as much as possible, it would be real difficult to stay away from the Red Onion House Fried Rice (P188). This one is loaded with scallions, egg and red onion. I really suggest pairing it up with their meat dishes.
The Sichuan Mala Chicken (P198) was a bit spicy so I did not have much of it since I have low tolerance on spicy foods. The other bloggers did say the chicken is tender and this one is certainly worth trying.
The Ginger Mahi-Mahi (P398) is a bit pricey but when we tasted it, we knew right away that it was worth every penny. It is certainly a dish you would order when you come back.
The best dish served was the Walnut Shrimp (P388). It was great that everyone was taking one piece after the other when this was served until there was one left. Of course, just what you would expect, everyone did not want the last piece...except me.
We ended the evening with Mango Shaved Snow Ice (P138). No meal is complete without dessert and this dish ended our event perfectly.
