Sumptuous budget pizza choices at Chef Arnold's

I knew little about this pizza joint located at N. Domingo, San Juan so I decided to join Openrice Eat's a Date in order to try out their pizza choices.  I am such a big fan of pizza so I could not resist this invitation.  I heard some of the bloggers got lost and that made for some laughter in the air.

The prices of the pizza here are mind boggling.  The largest at 16 inches is only 250 pesos, the family size is 170 while the smallest is only 60 pesos.  Even if the sizes shrink, the quality of the pizzas are still intact.

 Chicago White

The Chicago White pizza opened the night and we were told they were going to make us sample all of their pizzas.  That got me real excited especially since I sampled Chicago White and it was tremendous.  Some bloggers tried using the hot sauce and they ended up regretting it because it was too spicy.  It was another moment of laughter when I saw some blogger looking for some iced cold water.

I did not like pineapple on pizza so I had to take them out when I sampled their version of Hawaiian pizza. I have to admit I was never a fan of Hawaiian pizza but I became a fan of their version.

Margherita pizza is usually the cheapest pizza in most pizza establishments since it does not contain much ingredients.  All the pizzas given to us were really good as they were made fresh from the oven.  They also gave us a close up view on how they were made.

 New Yorker

The New Yorker is one pizza loaded with a lot of meat.  It got me searching for some drinks.  However, it was revealed that they were not allowed to serve drinks other than water for some reason.  It was a good thing one generous blogger decided to treat us to soda as soda and pizza make for a nice combination.

 Wild Wild Mushroom

I love mushrooms so it was no surprise that I loved Wild Wild Mushroom so much.  It was loaded with so many kinds of mushrooms that I forgot the names of some of them.  This was easily my favorite pizza of the night.  There were actually a lot of leftovers but the Openrice people took all of them.

Carbonara (P80)

Who would have ever thought that this Carbonara is only 80 pesos.  With its size, it is actually good for two people.  When I tasted it, it is was one good homemade treat.

Unland Kabuhayan Job Fair made official

It is indeed a partnership for the ages as jobsDB Philippines has partnered with Unland International for an event that will change the lives of those who are unemployed.  Unland International is an NGO whose aim is to fight poverty while jobsDB Philippines is the largest online recruitment website in the Asia Pacific region.

It is now signed, sealed and delivered.  jobsDB Philippines and Unland International have signed an MOA that they will organize a job fair called Unland Kabuhayan.  The job fair will happen on January 24 - 26, 2014 at the SMX Convention, Mall of Asia grounds.  It is expected to be attended by over 80000 participants and 200 exhibitors will be on hand to give all of them ample opportunities.

As a food blogger, I could not stop looking at the food the entire time.  I must say that being in a press conference for the first time can cross one thing off my bucket list and it even satisfied my appetite. The food served were delicious.

UPTC Chronicles I : Casa Verde & Cafe Shibuya

I promised myself that I would try all the restaurants at the newly opened UP Town Center.  All the restaurants here seem to have their own theme and they all have something unique that makes me want to try them out.  When we went there last time, we had lunch at Casa Verde then dessert at Cafe Shibuya.

How did those visits turn out?

Casa Verde:

It was a good thing we came at lunch time at Casa Verde as there were was no waiting list yet.  It is amazing how UP Town Center also has two restaurants that used to have long lines in J.Co and iHop.  Those lines have obviously fizzled and people are now curious about Casa Verde.

Brian's Ribs (P250)

It says in the menu that once you try it, you will never forget it.  How right it was!  I won't forget Brian's Ribs because of how affordable it is for a baby back rib.  A lot of people have also recommended this to me and now I know why.

Tenderloin Tips & Eggs (P198)

I loved how tender their meat was.  It was Casa Verde's version of the classic Filipino dish tapsilog but with tenderloin meat.  It was supposed to be for my girlfriend but I ended up eating half of it anyway.  That was how good it was.

John's Mix (P95)

John sure had a good idea for this non-alcoholic cocktail as it contained orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine and Sprite.  It was an energizing drink to say the least.

Simply Bliss (P95)

This drink combined orange juice, pineapple juice and coconut milk.  I liked the mix of ingredients here and I thought it made a really wonderful combination.

Cafe Shibuya:

Cheddar Cheese (Regular P225)

Oh my!  This dessert french toast lit up my eyes from the moment I had my first bite. I just kept on eating it without paying attention to the people around me .  Putting vanilla ice cream on top of cheesy french toast is certainly a delightful idea.  I would put this french toast on top of one of the best new things I have tasted this year.

Matcha Green Tea Latte (P135)

I made it a point to try the matcha latte of every coffee or milk tea shop that has it.  Kozui may be #1 on my list but Cafe Shibuya's version is a very close second.  In fact, when I get to try it again the two of them could already be tied for the top spot.  I am saying that despite the fact that I am a really harsh critic.

That would do it for this edition of the UPTC Chronicles.  Right now, I am really excited on which restaurants I am going to pick for part 2 as all the restaurants here look very promising.

Kampai! Roku celebrates one year of authentic Jap food!

In Japanese, it is Cheers!  There was reason to celebrate on the night of 11-12-13 as Roku celebrated its first year anniversary.  A lot of artists, musicians and media people(including me) graced the wonderful event and it was a success in more ways than one.

It was one of the best events I have attended this year as good music was provided by Deuce Manila.  There was also a photo booth for remembrance and there were prizes given away for best costume, best couple and best Instagram photo.

My alias for the night was Ramen Boy as I feasted on several cups of their ramen especially the Seafood Shio Ramen.  I have to say that I am became a big fan of ramen on this night because of what I tasted.

The Firecracker roll was very spicy.  I have a low tolerance on spicy food so I was not able to taste it.  My blogger friends told me it was really good though.

The Chicken and Beef Tsukume satisfied my cravings.  I had a lot of it but nobody noticed that including me as I lost count of the number of sticks I devoured.

The Sushi Trio included tempura, crab and salmon.  It was a sight to see for seafood lovers.  I tried out all three of them and they were all good.

I am not that fond of cakes but their Green Tea Cheesecake really became an instant favorite.  I would find myself craving for this cake on several occasions.

The campus movers for the night included Michelle Gumabao, Andre Paras, Alyssa Valdez, Fons Martinez and Steph Ayson.  There were also local celebrities present including Andi Eigenmann, Sam Milby, Yael Yuzon and Kris Bernal.  It was like an awards night and that shows how much people really appreciate the food at Roku.

Host Maxene Magalona never failed to energize the crowd.  It was my first time watching her host and she really is good with it.

Actress Andi Eigenmann showed us that she looks fantastic in personal.  It felt wonderful to see her for the first time.

Congratulations to owner Sheila Romero.  I am sure Roku will continue to be successful in the coming years as it was the first time I have tasted their food and I came away impressed.  Me and my friends Eyah and Kax sure had a good time.

I have to thank Sheila's daughter Milka Romero for inviting me.  She ended the night with a touching tribute for her mother and that was very sweet.

Teatro Porvenir pays tribute to Andres Bonifacio

Aldous ate the World is a proud media partner of Teatro Porvenir

In celebration of Andres Bonifacio’s sesquicentennial, Dulaang UP stages Teatro Porvenir, Ang Katangi-tanging Kasaysayan ni Andres Bonifacio, Macario Sakay at Aurelio Tolentino sa Entablado, a Palanca-winning play written by Tim Dacanay. Teatro Porvenir is a re-imagining of the history of the Katipunan through an amalgamation of myth and literature, history and religion. The play highlights Bonifacio as artist- a facet of this valiant revolutionary that remains largely unknown to most people.

It all starts with a struggling moro-moro troupe in Tondo, Teatro Porvenir  (Theater of Tomorrow). Its members, Aurelio Tolentino, Emilio Jacinto, Macario Sakay and the brothers Ciriaco, Procopio and Andres Bonifacio, try to introduce reforms in the komedya and senakulo. Born into a time of foment, their art-making is informed by the subversive works of Jose Rizal and Marcelo del Pilar. The moro-moro players ultimately become members of the supreme council of the Katipunan and play out their vital roles in Philippine history.

Culled from a diverse array of historical scholarship and documents, religious and literary traditions such as the sinakulo, komedya, awit, and pasyon, this highly imagist play seeks to bring to the 21st century a new interpretation of the life and times of Andres Bonifacio.

The play features a stellar cast headlined by seasoned theatre actors with emerging actors from UP and other theatre groups:  Romnick Sarmenta, Russell Legaspi, Jojit Lorenzo, Joel Saracho, Vlad Gonzales, Fitz Bitana, Jean Judith Javier, Karen Gaerlan, Natasha Cabrera, Fatima Cadiz, Nikki Lorenzo, Emerald BaƱares, Paul Jake Paule, Cedrick Juan, Io Balanon, Dan de Guzman, Janel Estuya, and the Dulaang UP ensemble composed mainly of freshmen from the theatre arts program.

Teatro Porvenir is directed by Dulaang UP’s artistic director Alexander Cortez.  Director Cortez also directed and translated  Adrian Cristobal’s The Trial of Andres Bonifacio (Ang Paglilitis) in 1997 which saw over 120 performances of this ground breaking historical play.  The prolific playwright  Floy Quintos shares his expertise as creative consultant; Meliton Roxas, Jr. and Ohm David do the technical direction and assistant technical direction respectively; set design by Hongkong-based Faust Peneyra, sound design by Jethro Joaquin and costumes by Nimrod Sta. Ana. The choreographic  team is headed by Angel Baguilat of the UP Dance Company and Filipino martial arts “arnis”  expert Bot Jocano; Batalla movement by Jess Macatuggal and Grace Jaramillo. The most important video designs are by Winter David, dramaturgy by Erika Estacio, photography by Dino Dimar, poster design by Tim Dacanay and graphics by Renee Balboa.

Teatro Porvenir runs from November 20 to December 8, 2013 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman. For more information and ticket inquiries, contact the Dulaang UP Office at 926-1349, 981-8500 local 2449, and 433-7840.

Are you ready to get Skewed?

I was ecstatic when I found out my homies Charmaine, Wero, Jaxon and Tsoostai from Couchsurfing Manila put up their own restaurant.  Add that to the fact that I just live nearby.  Last week, we finally got the opportunity to try their original skew all you can buffet.

It is the first barbeque skewer buffet in the country as each table comes with a grilling machine and an exhaust fan above in order to absorb the smoke.

Other than the skewer buffet, you can also choose to eat fried rice, vegetables, sisig and chicken for those who can't wait much longer.  I guarantee that the skewers are worth the wait though.

There is a wide range of skewers available and my favorite is the pork bbq and chicken wings.  The hotdogs and vegetables were good as well.  I love it when each stick comes with bell pepper.

The buffet starts at an amazing 299 pesos during lunch time and there are skewer packs for as low as 139 pesos.  Those who are watching their budget can opt for the budget meals for as low as 99 pesos.

Wero came up with the concept due to the fact that he loves street food.  He also took some suggestions from us and we suggested that there should be some steps so the customers would know what to do.  It should also be indicated when the skewers are already safe to eat. Wero promised that those concerns would be addressed in no time.

We had a fun time watching the skewers get cooked right in front of us.  While that is happening, it was the perfect time to share life stories with my blogger friends.  I noticed some of them even made new friends and that makes me happy.

This was one dinner to remember.  Don't agree with that?
